What in the world does baking bread have to do with
a life of prayer?

Using something as seemingly ordinary as baking bread, God taught me a whole new way to worship, pray, and enjoy His presence. He showed me how to stay connected to Him through healthy rhythms of work and rest, and He made my home a joyful house of prayer. And I realized, this isn’t just for me to experience—it’s for you, too.

Executive Global Strategies Pastor, Gateway Church

“Some authors and teachers are well-informed, diligent students and, therefore, can dispense good information. Then there are those who have actually fleshed out the teaching, put their theories to the test until they are proven, and are now laced with wisdom. These are the leaders who can say with genuine authority, ‘Here’s what works.’ Mary Jo has mixed the ingredients, kneaded the dough, seasoned it with experience, and baked the bread. You can trust her.”

Mary Jo Pierce is a modern-day Mary of Bethany. Her lifestyle and her writings serve as a compass for stepping beyond the veil of religious busyness and freely sitting at the feet of Jesus. Let It Rise welcomes us into Mary Jo’s prayer room and kitchen, revealing secrets for cultivating, cooperating with, and carrying God’s presence in every season and situation. As one who’s been entrusted with building a people of prayer, I find Let It Rise to be a treasured resource.

Let it Rise is a living illustration of how the presence of God shows up in the common, painful, or joyful places of life when we pause to pray.
The Lord offers healing, second chances, and holy moments that change us forever. We are inspired by Mary Jo’s life calling to prayer—it both challenges and nourishes us. Thank you, Mary Jo, for the inspiring nudge to “cultivate, communicate, and carry the presence of God” in every place.

About the author

Mary Jo Pierce is an accomplished author and public speaker. She served as the Pastor of Prayer & Intercession at Gateway Church in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas for more than 17 years. Mary Jo believes every person can connect with God, and she shares her passion for prayer through teaching, writing, and baking bread. Her books, Let,It Rise, Adventures in Prayer and Follow Me, have unlocked the  joy of living prayer for readers across the world.

Mary Jo combines her love of prayer, scriptures, and baking bread in her Acts 2:42 prayer-baking retreats. Taking the principals from Exodus 33:7-18, she artfully connects the Jewish tradition of making challah bread with the rest God promises Moses with His presence. Over 800 have gathered in her home and experienced first-hand the joy of baking bread and the tangible presence and rest of God in the process.

Married to her “Brucie” for 44 years, they make their home in Keller, TX with their two Maltese sisters, Honor and Glory. They have served in the Lord in various ministries in their home and other nations for a combined 90 years!  A recently purchased sign for their prayer garden says it all, “And so together, they have built a life they love.”  Thanking God every day.
